Could It Be That Our Roads Are Getting Safer?

If you’re lucky, you actually don’t know anyone who has been injured or even killed in a vehicle accident here in the UK. Somehow however, most people know of a co-worker, friend or even a relative who has been in some sort of accident. The good news is that modern car manufacturers go to a lot of trouble to make their cars as safe as possible and have introduced over the last several decades such innovations as airbags, and crumple zones that will absorb a lot of the impact that a car receives in a collision. So while accidents are not completely unavoidable, the consequences do not need to be as drastic or dire as in the past.

Many people understandably get excited about new car deals

Even so, there are still a lot of irresponsible people who don’t treat their cars, the roads or other drivers with enough respect. This could happen in many ways, all of which are basically voluntary and conscious. Some people try to drive home after a night out at the local pub, or from some fancy cocktail event. They are obviously in no shape to drive their car responsibly, and should instead get a ride from someone or take a cab. But, in their state of inebriation, they think that they can manage anything, get on the road, and very often cause a serious accident.

Bad Excuses for Bad Driving Habits

Then there are those that just drive too fast. They may be in a hurry to go somewhere, which is no excuse, or they may like the thrill of speed, which is also not a good explanation. Then, there is the distracted driver, the one who may have children in the car causing a ruckus or worse, the driver himself may be using his smartphone to send e-mails or text messages while driving. There has certainly been an increase in accidents as a result of distracted driving, as the proliferation of mobile devices continues to grow.

Law enforcement agencies try their best to provide the utmost safety on our roads. Banning the use of mobile phones while driving is a step in the right direction. We already have severe penalties for drunk driving, as well as speeding. Hopefully these act as deterrents for these inexcusable behaviours. On the other hand, it is understandable that with all of the new car deals available in the market, many people are tempted to get the car of their dreams and once in their possession, want to see for themselves exactly all it can do. It may have such a deluxe sound system or other electronic devices that they want to spend as much time as possible in their new car.

Some Actions That Provide Positive Results

From some of the latest results that have been reported by the authorities, it appears that these efforts have been successful, and that casualties in accidents in general have decreased in the last few years, as compared to a decade ago. Perhaps all those efforts, all those campaigns to educate the driving public are finally bearing fruit.
